Sustainable Energy Generation at the Frogmary Green Farm

Sustainable energy is produced at Sustainable Energy Generation located at the Frogmary Green Farm. Here crops are fed to an onsite anaerobic digester to produce biogas, which is upgraded by the DMT Carborex®MS biogas upgrading technology. The produced renewable natural gas is supplied back to the national gas grid and is used by the local community. The Frogmary Green Farm is 100% reliant on renewable energy.

About the Project

The farm has an onsite anaerobic digester that processes agricultural waste from maize, wheat and barley. Chicken manure is also added to the digestion process. The gas that is prodced in the AD is upgraded with the DMT Carborex®MS Technology to renewable natural gas. One of the goals was to replace traditional brown energy with with clean, renewable energy. Ixora Energy operates a few biogas upgrading plants in the UK.

Most of them are farms that have an anaerobic digester on site. Maximising the use of farm waste to deliver green gas to the local community was one of the goals of Ixora Energy. Creating a safe and environmentally friendly working environment whilst contributing to the energy transistion to clean energy.

Chicken litter is a difficult feedstock but maximizing the use of it was easy due to the DMT biogas upgrading technology. It takes care of all the contaminants before the gas is upgraded to biomethane.

Project Results

The plant has achieved an uptime of over 98% in 2020 and produces 600m3 biomethane per hour. The DMT biogas upgrading technology is build with quality in mind. “We continue to offer support through our local service partners, Heat & Power Services for the UK, to ensure the highest uptime and maximise the plats performance”, says Stephen McCulloch, Business Director at DMT.

The plant at Frogmary is one of the four biogas upgrading system that is operated by Ixora Energy. All plants have the DMT biogas upgrading technology installed.

“Sustainable Energy Generation biogas upgrading plant supplies 6,900 homes with clean renewable energy.

“Once commissioned we were immediately able to ramp up to full throughput of the DMT. Our highest output site achieved 98% uptime at 96% of maximum output last year.” – Mark Voss, Operating Director, Ixora Energy.

Project Benefits

  • 6,900 homes provided with clean energy
  • 100% renewable energy
  • 99.5% methane recovery
  • 98% plant uptime

Biogas in your industry

Biogas is produced during anaerobic digestion of organic substrates, such as manure, sewage sludge, the organic fractions of household and industry waste, and energy crops. It is produced in large scale digesters, as well as in small scale digesters. Biogas produced in an anearobic digester is very suitable for upgrading, increasing the value of the waste of your agricultural production site.
