DePrex® – Degassing Anaerobic Digested Sludge Streams

February 4, 2025

Digested sludge streams that exit an anaerobic digester still contain methane, together with other compounds such as hydrogen sulphide.

DePrex® is a process that removes dissolved methane from the digested sludge stream, resulting in recovery of the methane, which leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Between 85 – 90% of the dissolved methane is recovered – this gas would make its way to the atmosphere through the sludge plant, either via any sludge storage facilities and/or sludge dewatering.

Example Comparison

  • Gas yield for a 100,000EP treatment plant increases by approximately 3.9%
  • This results in approx. 63 kWh/d of energy if cogeneration is used
  • Reduces GHG emissions by equivalent 393 kg CO2/d
(Left to right) 1. Digested sludge, untreated t = 30min; 2. Digested sludge, degassed p = 400 mbar; t = 15min; 3. Digested sludge, degassed p = 400 mbar; t = 30min

Other Benefits

  • Improved sludge settleability and dewaterability
  • Odour reduction within the sludge dewatering plant
  • H2S removal – reduces hazardous atmosphere at the sludge dewatering plant
  • Optional dosing for struvite removal
