The Largest Grit Washing and Dewatering Facility in Australia Entrusted to Hydroflux Epco
The Malabar STP operated by Sydney Water is one of the largest sewage intakes in Australia. Recently the plant was upgraded as part of a reliability project.
Project Overview
Hydroflux Huber were awarded a contract for the supply of HUBER RoSF4 Grit Washing Classifiers, to wash and dewater the grit captured in the plant’s longitudinal grit traps.
Based on the outstanding performance of HUBER’s installations at Bondi STP, Nth Head and Warriewood, Sydney Water entrusted the award of their largest grit washing system to Hydroflux Epco.

Grit is coated in an organic layer that even influences the apparent density of the particles. To remove this organic material, a rigorous grit washing system is required to achieve the separation of organic from the grit particles.
HUBER invented the fluid bed concept back in the 1990’s to counteract increased disposal costs, and since then over 1500 Grit Washers have been installed worldwide. The grit can even be used to blend in with road base, hence allowing a sustainable reuse of this by-product.
