HydraLITE® Acidification Series

Mineral and Organic Acids for Water and Wastewater Treatment

Hydroflux Utilities offers a comprehensive range of mineral and organic acids for water and wastewater treatment as part of our HydraLITE® chemical series. All HydraLITE products are available in various concentrations and convenient packaging options including pales, 1000L IBC’s, and bulk quantities.

Our HydraLITE acids are used in a range of water and wastewater treatment applications including:

  • Sulfuric Acid (H₂SO₄) – Used for pH adjustment, coagulation and flocculation processes, and scale removal in water treatment.
  • Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) – Commonly used for pH control, dissolving and removing mineral scales and metal oxides, and neutralising alkaline waste streams.
  • Phosphoric Acid (H₃PO₄) – Utilised for pH adjustment, scale removal, and corrosion control by forming protective phosphate layers.
  • Citric Acid (C₆H₈O₇) – Frequently used for cleaning membranes, removing inorganic foulants and metal oxides, and is gentle on membrane materials.
  • Nitric Acid (HNO₃) – Used for oxidising and removing organic and inorganic fouling, as well as sanitising membranes and equipment.

Why choose Hydroflux Utilities as your HydraLITE® Supplier?

Choosing the type of acid used in your water and wastewater process is critical for the safe and effective operation of water and wastewater assets. Hydroflux Utilities understands the impact of acid selection on process safety, material compatibility as well as water chemistry changes on process performance. The Hydroflux Utilities team is experienced in the operation and maintenance of acid dosing and control systems and provides routine optimisation of dosing systems to prevent excess acid usage. With our operational experience and diverse range of acids, you can trust that you’ll receive precisely the right product to meet your treatment objectives.

Hydroflux Utilities is more than just a chemical supplier

Hydroflux Utilities goes beyond being just a chemical supplier; we become your trusted advisor.

When you engage in a chemical supply contract with us, we schedule free regular site visits. During these visits, Hydroflux professionals discuss various aspects of plant performance and chemical usage. We offer professional advice for further optimisation, ensuring continuous improvement in your treatment processes.

Efficient national chemical supply chain

Whether you are purchasing HydraLITE in pails, IBC’s or bulk deliveries, Hydroflux has dedicated logistics teams that ensure a streamlined supply of chemicals to customers from our warehouses. We deliver chemicals to your site seamlessly and on time through well-established supply chains, minimising disruptions to your operations.

We also rent chemical dosing systems

Renting chemical dosing equipment gives you the latest technology without high upfront costs and long-term commitment. It offers temporary solutions for seasonal demands, emergencies, or trials before investing in permanent systems. Renting provides the flexibility and support needed for optimal process operations.

Sustainable Solutions

As Australia’s first certified carbon-neutral water and wastewater chemical supply and service business, developing and delivering sustainable solutions for treatment plant operation and maintenance is at the core of what we do. Our HydraLITE acids are the most sustainable in the Australian and New Zealand market. They are not just effective at protecting our valuable water resources, but are also carbon-neutral. HydraLITE FAQs

What acids do you normally use in industrial wastewater treatment plants?

We normally use sulfuric acid between 30-70% strength due to it being quite effective at low dose rates compared to other acids, because it has better handling characteristics compared to most other acids. Hydrochloric acid also serves a similar purpose but is more aggressive, requiring more extensive storage and handling procedures. Nitric acid can be useful for treating wastewaters with high organic content, though it tends to be more corrosive and expensive. It’s important to note that using acids will increase the salt concentration in the water— for instance, dosing sulphuric acid will raise sulphate levels. Increasing salt concentrations can impact downstream processes, so considerations such as cost, safety, and the effects on subsequent treatment stages should influence the choice of acid.

Do acids freeze in the winter?

Generally, not in Australia. Sulphuric acid has a relatively low freezing point, around -10°C for concentrated solutions but approximately -1°C  in a 30% solution, so it generally does not freeze in most areas depending on the storage mechanisms and the dilution. Hydrochloric acid and nitric acid have even lower freezing points, making them less likely to freeze under typical winter temperatures.

Do IBC’s of acid require bunding?

In short, yes. In Australia, the bunding of Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) is regulated by the Australian Standard AS 1940:2017 and Safe Work Australia guidelines. Bunds must be constructed from compatible, durable materials and have provisions to prevent water ingress and manage accumulated liquids safely.

What concentration of acids do you supply?

Acids are available in various concentrations tailored to different industrial needs. Concentrated sulphuric acid is supplied in concentrations of 93-98% although many customers prefer diluted solutions of 30 – 50%. Hydrochloric acid is typically available at 30-37%. Nitric acid is often provided in concentrations of 60-68%, and acetic acid is usually supplied at around 75% as glacial acetic acid, with diluted forms also offered for specific applications. The concentration impacts the handling, storage, materials, and suitability of the acid for particular processes, so selecting the appropriate concentration based on the application requirements is essential.

Do you sell specialty acids for cleaning and CIP inside our factory?

Generally, no as our focus and expertise in the application of chemicals in water and wastewater treatment processes. We do however supply a wide range of acids that are used for membrane cleaning in process water and water and wastewater treatment plants.
