Why use Antifoam Agents?
Antifoam agents, also known as defoamers or antifoaming agents, are essential in wastewater treatment for several reasons:
- Preventing Foam Formation: Foam can form in wastewater treatment processes due to the presence of surfactants, organic matter, or gases released during biological processes. Antifoam agents help prevent excessive foam formation, which can interfere with process efficiency and equipment operation.
- Enhancing Process Efficiency: Foam can hinder the performance of equipment such as pumps, mixers, and aeration systems by reducing their effectiveness. By controlling foam formation, antifoam agents help maintain optimal process conditions and improve overall efficiency.
- Reducing Maintenance Requirements: Excessive foam buildup can lead to equipment fouling and increased maintenance requirements. Antifoam agents help minimise foam-related issues, reducing the frequency of equipment cleaning and maintenance tasks.
- Ensuring Regulatory Compliance: Foam can contain pollutants and impede the accurate measurement of process parameters such as dissolved oxygen levels. Antifoam agents assist in maintaining clear process conditions, facilitating accurate monitoring and compliance with regulatory standards.
Hydroflux Utilities is more than just a chemical supplier
Hydroflux Utilities goes beyond being just a chemical supplier; we become your trusted advisor.
When engaged in a chemical supply contract, we schedule free regular site visits where Hydroflux professionals discuss various aspects of the plant performance and chemical usage, and offer professional advice for further optimisation, ensuring continuous improvement in your treatment processes.

Antifoam FAQs
Although these terms are loosely interchanged, antifoam and defoamer agents serve to control foam but differ in their timing and application. Antifoams are added proactively to prevent foam formation, whereas defoamers are used reactively to break down existing foam.
Antifoams work by reducing the surface tension of the liquid, which destabilises the foam bubbles. They spread across the liquid surface and into the foam, causing bubbles to merge and collapse. This action breaks the foam structure and prevents new foam from forming by disrupting the formation of stable bubble films.
Antifoams are typically made of various substances, including silicone oils, polydimethylsiloxanes, and hydrophobic silica. They can also contain organic compounds like fatty alcohols, fatty acids, and esters, as well as emulsifiers to ensure even distribution in the foaming medium.
The amount of antifoam needed can vary widely depending on the specific application, the type of antifoam used, and the foaming characteristics of the system. Generally, antifoams are used in small quantities, typically ranging from 10 to a few hundred parts per million (ppm). It’s important to start with the manufacturer’s recommended dosage and then adjust as necessary based on the system’s performance and foam control needs. Hydroflux Utilties can conduct small-scale tests to help determine the optimal amount for your specific situation.
To use antifoam, you will likely have to dilute it according to the manufacturer’s instructions to achieve the desired concentration. The antifoam must be applied in an area that ensures thorough mixing with the liquid to be treated for uniform distribution and it can be applied continuously or intermittently, depending on your process needs. Hydroflux Utilities can assist with dosing pumps stations and other equipment to ensure the performance is maximised.
