Wells for World Water Day 2021

This year Hydroflux is celebrating and raising awareness of the global water crisis and in supporting UN’s (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030 has partnered with Love Mercy Australia to deliver critically needed village wells to rural Northern Uganda. With the first well already completed in Ating Village the partnership is off to a great start.

Ating Village resident population of 500 in rural Northern Uganda needed to walk several kms to reach their poor-quality water source multiple times a day. Christmas this year was certainly different with the construction of their village well facilitated by Hydroflux, Love Mercy and their sponsors.

Partnering with Love Mercy Australia to provide clean water to rural communities in Northern Uganda through Love Mercy’s Well Worth It program – <a style="color: #e86425;" rel="noopener" href="https://www.lovemercyfoundation.org/causes/well-worth-it/" target="_blank">www.lovemercyfoundation.org/causes/well-worth-it</a> – Hydroflux was proud to help deliver the first of many wells this year to help relieve poverty through easy and safe access to clean water. Each project will include a U2/U3 hand pump, which is a localised version of the original India MK II hand pump and a bore hole that will reach a depth of at least 60m. <a style="color: #e86425;" rel="noopener" href="https://www.hydroflux.com.au/world-water-day-a-story-of-dedication-and-tenacity/" target="_blank">Click here</a> for an interesting link to a Hydroflux staff member on the original development of the India MK II hand pump. In Northern Uganda, women and children walk anywhere from 5 – 10kms to collect essential water 3 times per day, often leaving them in vulnerable situations and not allowing them to attend school to receive an education that will give them opportunities that poverty will not. For women who are the primary caretakers of the land and family in Uganda. This time takes away from tending to their crop and caring for their family. The crops are essential – they take time to grow are the main source of income for a family. They are also often the main source of food. Once a crop has been harvested, a woman can sell that at the market for income to send her children to school, to pay for health care to buy other food. Often, the water collected is sourced from creeks and swamps where domestic and wild animals congregate to drink and is heavily contaminated.
